This chapter examines the return of the Tubeufs to the coal mining business after the French Revolution. On December 3, 1802, Pierre-François Tubeuf wrote a letter to the government signifying his intent to reopen the Abilon mine near the Grand-Combe and stressing the importance of a strong coal industry to the nation's growth. The government recognized the importance of coal to the economy and allowed Tubeuf to reopen his mines. The advent of peace provided the opportunity to address the economic problems brought about by a decade of internal and external conflict, and allowed Tubeuf to revive the coal industry.
