The Identification of Metaphor

The Identification of Metaphor

(p.40) 2 The Identification of Metaphor

Oxford University Press

Although analyses of metaphor in the past few years have surpassed previous ones in subtlety and sophistication, people still lack an adequate understanding of metaphorical meaning. This chapter addresses the question by discussing an issue that has received little attention, namely, the identification of an utterance as metaphorical as it is often perceived to be difficult to make such distinctions. In this regard, what must be considered would be those conditions which pertain when the appropriate interpretation of an utterance is metaphorical rather than literal, technical, fanciful, figurative but not metaphorical, or simply mistaken. The set of necessary conditions taken conjointly are meant to pick out just those utterances for which it would be appropriate to give a metaphorical interpretation.
