This chapter compares the study of the mind to that of a complex crystal, noting that a complete understanding of its current shape might require some understanding of its growth and formation. The purpose of this book is to elaborate a new perspective from which the approaches to the mind may be viewed as aspects of a single truth. The book provides a review of four psychiatric schools: objective-descriptive, psychoanalytic, existential, and interpersonal psychiatry. But certain schools are conspicuously absent without explanation. Their omission stems from a perspective defined by the expression ‘Approaches to the Mind’. There are some very sophisticated and useful theories of human behaviour that either omit as superfluous or reject as injurious the whole concept of mind.
