Love and Friendship in Plato and Aristotle

Aristotle's account of perfect friendship amounts to an analysis of friendship as people conceive it, yet for him, it is only a part, if also the focus, of a wider classification of interpersonal relations to which the language of friendship is variable appropriate. It is best to trace the interconnections by which he maps out his topic before reflecting upon its boundaries. What emerges is not a genius of friendship that forms a whole which unifies its species, but a range of relationships held together less by subsumption under a single formula than by reference to a single type. Although there is no genius of friendship, friend is not quite homonymous, for the varieties of friendship are focally connected to a primary kind.
