This chapter deals with an important initiative in Ireland to underline the fact that there is no inevitability about the British system and to demonstrate that other options are available. It considers the Social Welfare (No. 2) Act 1982, and how it has operated in practice. The second section sets out the trade disqualification system operating before 1982 and examines the pressures for reform. The third section examines the detailed provisions of the Act and the procedural regulations related to it. The fourth section deals wit aspects of how the law has operated in practice, looking particularly at the work of the Social Welfare Tribunal, the body set up to deal with applications for adjudication.
