Keeping Community Contacts

Keeping Community Contacts

(p.80) 5 Keeping Community Contacts
Community Policing

Nigel Fielding

Oxford University Press

This chapter discusses the maintenance of community contacts. The ‘costs’ of maintaining contacts, even with those deemed respectable, should not be underestimated. Officers must attune to the expectations of a variety of people, from individuals on their beat to representatives of local agencies and groups. Maintaining working relationships with representatives of organizations ostensibly sharing core concerns with the police requires its own kind of forbearance, as with youth and community workers involved in multi-agency programmes on ‘problem’ estates. The multi-agency approach is established policy in respect of a range of social problems and it is worth examining an instance to get an idea of the limits and potential of such ongoing co-operation in respect of order maintenance policing.
