Love of God in this life is inseparable from hope for Augustine. It is a movement of desire and longing for an ultimate goal: sight or knowledge. Augustine's teaching on the beauty of Creation, which has as its end the vision of the supreme beauty of God, assumes an eschatological aspect. Augustine likens Creation to the words of a sentence or poem, whose temporal sequence must pass before the beauty of the whole can be grasped. Creation awaiting the revelation of the Sons of Men is likened by Augustine to the colours of a painter on a palate, waiting to be applied to a painting to take on a new image and value. Thus, the beauty of Creation is relative.
