Neale’s Craft of Fiction

(p.181) Chapter 8 Neale’s Craft of Fiction
J. M. Neale and the Quest for Sobornost

Oxford University Press

This chapter examines Neale’s works of fiction. He helped to bring the Orthodox Church to the popular mind through oriental fiction. At least five of his works were of oriental fiction. Three of them were novels: Theodora Phranza or The Fall of Constantinople, The Lazar–House of Leros, and The Lady of Tiflis. Two were shorter pieces: ‘Erick’s Grave’ and ‘The Story of S. Metrophanes of Voronej’. Neale’s fiction, comprising thirty novels and collections of short stories, was popular, especially among younger readers. His work formed a part of the larger tradition of the Victorian religious historical novel. He concentrated on certain themes while working within this genre to aid his portrayal of the Orthodox Church.
