Discrimination and Pay
Discrimination and Pay
This chapter begins with a discussion of the existence of gender-pay gaps both within and between occupations, and within and between industries and workplaces. It then considers why this gap exists between men’s and women’s wages. It addresses whether the gender-pay gap, to the extent that it results from the relationship between pay and one or all of these factors, should be considered ‘discriminatory’, and whether, and if so to what extent and how, it should be addressed by legislation. Answering this latter question means considering the extent to which existing legislation is apt to address the problem.
