A Conceptual Framework
The concept of substance first emerges in the history of the Greek word ousia. But the historical development can hardly be grasped without some preliminary sketch of the logical patterns involved. This chapter attempts such a sketch. From the standpoint of etymology, ousia means ‘being’; it is the abstract noun connected with the verb ‘to be’. As such it combines some logical features which are common to abstract nouns with others belonging to the verb ‘to be’. These are considered in turn.
