This chapter uses factor analysis to help decide, first of all, how many — or how few — general dimensions of principle underlie many particular questions of principle; and, secondly, how closely or loosely individual questions of principle depend upon more general dimensions of principle. It focuses on those elements of principle which our many individual questions have in common. It also pursues a comparison of people and politicians to find out whether politicians have the same structure of general principles as the public.
