For most of the Israeli politicians, the Asian continent constituted terra incognita with which Israel had scant contact and inadequate representation. Sharett, however, had evinced great fascination with the area, especially with India. For many years he had worked to expand Israel's diplomatic relations also with other countries to include China, Japan, and the Philippines. It was therefore not surprising that, upon receiving a formal invitation to participate in a large conference of the Asian socialist parties in Rangoon, he convinced his cabinet colleagues to approve the first major trip of a senior Israeli politician to Asia.
