Personal Computers: The Power of Open Standards

Personal Computers: The Power of Open Standards

(p.131) 6 Personal Computers: The Power of Open Standards
Standards, Strategy, and Policy

Peter Grindley

Oxford University Press

This chapter discusses the introduction of the personal computer (PC) and how it became a principal example of the ability of open standards to focus on a new technology and create a new industry. Producers and users followed as they recognized the PC as an acceptable combination for new technologies and as being an open standard for which they could look forward to wide support and unrestricted access. This case shows the strengths and weaknesses of an open standards strategy and the trade-off between market size and share. Lessons for this strategy established an open standard where there are more effective ways to build on a new standard rather than just trying to change it.
