The management control strategies of Valleyco and Nippon CTV are both founded on output or technological controls which are underpinned by forms of bureaucracy. Still the two cases differ in a number of ways and in practice the process of control varies between the two plants and even between areas within a single plant. Following on from the descriptions of management control strategies in place, this chapter documents what workers do, particularly in relation to those control strategies. This chapter provides evidence that workers combine aspects of co-operation and resistance in their everyday working lives. Workers also face differing degrees of choice; opportunities for resistance may be severely restricted and the scope for choice very narrowly defined. This chapter reveals that individual workers engage in very different behaviours within a similar context, emphasizing the importance of subjectivity in discussing worker action.
