This introductory chapter explains the coverage of the book, which is about the different interpretations of the relationships among social class, social mobility and social justice. The book evaluates several competing conceptions of social justice, each of which is of possible relevance to the issue of social class, and contrasts inequalities of outcome and access. It introduces data on social mobility in advanced societies, provides detailed definitions of social class, and explains the rationale behind the so-called Goldthorpe class schema.
