This chapter examines three aspects of meritocracy with respect to inequality and social justice. It finds that the direct effect of origins on class destinations has declined over the past twenty years and that class inequalities in educational attainment have widened over the same period. The findings also reveal that the association between class destinations and educational achievement has remained more or less constant over time. The chapter acknowledges that there are conceptions of merit that are not adequately indicated by measures of education.
