This chapter recognizes and discusses two distinct strategic orientations to the paradox. Each builds on quite a different set of assumptions around how learning emerges from information flows and organizational procedures. Each produces an identifiable approach to the management of knowledge assets. The two orientations are not mutually exclusive and can often coexist within a single firm, either in different parts of the organization at a similar time, or a similar part of the organization at different times. The two polar conceptions of knowledge function at different levels of complexity. The cumulative view of the evolution of knowledge makes it a relatively stable hierarchical process. The hypothesis that will be established in this chapter is that conceptualizing knowledge as cumulative leads to the adoption of hoarding strategies, whereas conceptualizing it in paradigmatic terms favours sharing strategies.
