This chapter introduces three models applying to contact phenomena, as well as a psycholinguistic model of language production. The Matrix Language Frame (MLF) model is specific to codeswitching; the 4-M model and the Abstract Level model are more general. Two general principles are introduced: the Uniform Structure Principle and the Asymmetry Principle. Contact phenomena indicate a link between competence and performance.
