This chapter introduces the quark-parton model (QPM). The cross-section expressions for point-like elastic electron-quark and quasi-elastic neutrino-quark scattering are developed. The full cross-section for lepton-nucleon deep inelastic scattering is constructed by folding the point-like elastic cross-sections with parton momentum densities. This then leads to expressions for the electromagnetic and neutrino nucleon structure functions in terms of parton density functions, showing that in the QPM the structure functions are approximately independent of momentum transfer — verifying the prediction of ‘Bjorken scaling’. An outline of other elementary tests of the quark-parton model then follows and the chapter ends with a discussion of sum rules.
