This chapter begins with a functional classification of primary nociceptive neurons. It then presents current understanding of the molecules that allow nociceptors to detect noxious chemical, thermal, and mechanical stimuli. It describes the molecular processes by which this information is converted into action potentials and transmitted to the spinal cord. Finally, the chapter briefly describes the effects of an inflammatory insult on nociceptor function. For the sake of simplicity, it focuses primarily upon events related to cutaneous nociception.
