Modality and cognition in developmental theories and the evidence
This chapter evaluates the evidence provided in relation to empiricist explanations and Piaget's theory on the manner in which the sense of modalities operate in spatial performance. Theories from the past that dominates developmental thinking differ in how they envisioned the relation between the sense of modalities and its relation to cognitive processes. Thus, the chapter looks at the paradigms presented here first as they were intended as evidence for Piaget's theory of logical thinking. After the evidence that relates to Piaget's theory of logical knowledge is considered, the implications of finding for spatial coding by infants are discussed. Also, the chapter examines the phenomenalist view of the modalities as a unitary problem.
