The modalities as convergent sources of spatial information
This chapter begins by discussing the complementary nature of visual and movement information in early sensorimotor skills and the relation between hearing and movement. Subsequently, observations and results of intervention programmes with blind infants are considered. The chapter argues that on the basis of previous experiments the different sense of modalities actually provides complementary, convergent, and overlapping information. The point is illustrated by other empirical studies, particularly on reaching, sitting, and standing by infants, with and without sight of the spatial environment. As a final point, experiments on the effects of bimodal and concomitant inputs are illustrated which shows some of the conditions under which redundant information from different sources is an advantage.
