Information and understanding large-scale space
Information and understanding large-scale space
While the previous chapter focuses on small-scale space, the representation of large-scale space is considered in this chapter. It begins by discussing some developmental theories and evidence which includes Siegel and White's theory, one of the best known theories specifically concerned with the development of spatial coding on a large-scale or geographical scale. It then examines the orientation and route knowledge in geographical space, and its representation in terms of configurations. It also presents how the evidence shows that memory of actually moving through space, and representing this in terms of maps, requires some form of symbolic translation.
