This chapter summarizes the key facts that have led to the proposal of the three-phase model of memory consolidation following active avoidance training in the rat, and compares it with the three-phase model of memory consolidation in the chick. These experiments, together with numerous other experiments combining all the procedures, have led to a more detailed model of memory consolidation. There is strong evidence that hypoxia in the rat prevents the formation of medium-term memory (MTM) specifically. Hence, and in light of the strong evidence for three-phase consolidation in the chick, it is reasonable to conclude that it has a similar action in the chick. It may be further inferred that the neurochemical processes underlying MTM formation in both rat and chick are similar in nature; a striking inference which needs confirmation by further experiments with different agents in both species.
