It is only in recent years that we have come to realise how important is the part played by cell death in the development, homeostasis, and injury responses of the nervous system. During development excess neurons and glia are produced, and many then die to leave behind the required number of cells. In the mature nervous system there are progenitor cells constantly dividing, the progeny either dying or differentiating, and following injury there is extensive neuronal and glial cell death. This chapter covers the basic biology of cell survival and death, providing a background for the other chapters of this book.
