This chapter analyses the role of the cerebellum in locomotor coordination. Different brain motor centres participate in the correction and modulation of the motor patterns generated by the spinal limb controllers. The cerebellum plays an important role in the organization of supraspinal influences on the spinal mechanisms. As shown in numerous studies, removal of the cerebellum, lesions to its parts, or their temporary functional inactivation results in discoordination of stepping movements, both in otherwise intact animals and in humans. The chapter considers the contribution of the cerebellum in the control of stepping movements of the hind limb. The scratch reflex, with only one limb involved in rhythmic activity, was also used as a simpler model to enhance the analysis of signal processing in the cerebellum. Influences of the hind-limb subdivision of the cerebellum on the cerebral cortex are mediated by the interposite nucleus.
