Apraxias have been defined as higher-order motor disturbances that are not due to paresis, a primary motor defect (normal strength, reflexes, coordination), ataxia, aphasia, or dementia. The basic deficit of an apraxic patient lies in the fact that the production of different natural movements is no longer possible. This can apply to complex manual actions or gestural movements, but also to routine everyday actions, such as dressing oneself or walking. Following acute brain damage, apraxias can appear at least as commonly as paresis or elementary motor disturbances.
