A contrast discrimination technique was developed that revealed parvocellular (PC)- and magnocellular (MC)-pathway function by taking advantage of their differences in achromatic contrast response. Spatiotemporal processing for these pathways was evaluated using achromatic stimuli. The signals leaving the retina are subject to considerable further processing by higher visual processes. By biasing the early retinal processing to one or other pathway, different properties of higher order processes can be accessed. This chapter reviews these studies, indicating the possible clinical applications of the approach.
