A New York City childhood
A New York City childhood
Julian Seymour Schwinger was born on February 12, 1918 in New York City into a middle class family. His father, Benjamin Schwinger, was born in the town of Nowy Sacz in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in the part of Poland which throughout the 19th century remained under the rule of Austro-Hungarian Empire. Julian's mother Bella was born in the Polish industrial city of Lodz; she came to New York City as an infant with her family. By 1935, at the age of 17, after Julian Schwinger had spent two years at the City College of New York, it was already clear that he would make a major mark in physics. He had mastered the literature of the most fundamental branch of science at the time, nuclear physics, and was beginning to make original contributions to research. The career of one of the greatest American physicists of the 20th century had begun.
