Human development, life course, intervention and health

(p.111) Chapter 5 Human development, life course, intervention and health
Epidemiological Methods in Life Course Research

Clyde Hertzman

Oxford University Press

This chapter proposes three generic models of life course trajectories in health, well-being, and behaviour and learning skills, starting from the essential early life processes of physical growth and development in socio-emotional, and language and cognition terms. For the adult period, models are proposed of how life course experience affects human biology. These principles are then reviewed in terms of how they can be implemented in intervention study designs, and criteria are outlined for a new generation of intervention studies.
