This chapter develops an evolutionary view of the functions of music. It presents clear evidence, on the one hand, that humans are predisposed to engage in music-like activities, such that music can be considered to be part of our biological heritage; but paradoxically, that music is also inherently ambiguous, taking a multiplicity of forms and fulfilling many different functions according to specific social and cultural conditions.
