This chapter emphasises how models can be used to make predictions about how children with developmental disorders will behave. It describes a simple model of the learning styles and savant skills of children with autism and argues that the different learning styles reflect an increased number of neurons in functional brain systems in autism. While this model does a good job of capturing the broad facets of learning in children with autism, it also makes specific predictions about behaviours in novel contexts and about the kinds of interventions that are likely to be most effective given the neural mechanisms that underlie the learning styles observed. Thus, this chapter illustrates how one can make the transition from theory to practice using implemented models.
