This chapter chronicles the life of John Pell in Amsterdam and Breda from 1643 to 1652. John Pell had little idea of what awaited him in Amsterdam; apparently he thought his trip was to be a brief visit, for the purpose of being interviewed. On April 27, 1644 the Burgemeesters of Amsterdam agreed to appoint Pell to the Chair of Mathematics at the Athenaeum, of a period of one year in the first instance. So began Pell's new life as a Professor of Mathematics. For the next two years (until he moved to a similar post at Breda) he would deliver a public lecture, in Latin, each week-day morning during term-time.
