Different examples of self-action of the electron gas onto its own energy spectrum are considered. In a regular structure, it is the Peierls transition when a minigap in the spectrum appears to decrease the total energy of the electron gas. In a doped semiconductor, it is conversion of the impurity level into the impurity band caused by random electric fields produced by charged impurities. Inside the impurity band, a soft Coulomb gap in the density-of-states often appears at the Fermi level.
