The impact of the ‘Mozart effect’ has been phenomenal. Judging from the publicity, its potential as a panacea would appear to be almost unlimited. In the cognitive domain, music is now used to stimulate fetuses and neonates, to treat epilepsy and to ameliorate memory loss in Alzheimer patients. A careful examination of the experimental evidence for the claim that listening to music enhances cognition, however, fails to provide the necessary support. The scientific research, as we have seen, has shown that listening to Mozart's music may enhance performance on one particular spatial-temporal task but on no other.
