The preoccupation with the history and evolution of the field is also reflected in a 1992 letter published in response to an article about the work of the American physician Alfred Worcester, whose 1935 volume The Care of the Aged, the Dying and the Dead Cicely Saunders had read with great interest in the early 1960s.
