This article for the American magazine The Pharos explains how, from the mid-1970s, the term ‘palliative care’ gradually defined a developing specialty. It also examines how much remains to be investigated, taught, and practised before citizens can expect communications and care tailored to their individual needs. According to Professor Patrick Wall, the old methods of care and caring had to be rediscovered and the best of modern medicine had to be turned to the task of new study and therapy specifically directed at pain.
