This introductory chapter sets out the purpose of the book, which is to present and elaborate the theory of visual attention (TVA) introduced by Bundesen (1990) and the neural theory of visual attention (NTVA) of Bundesen et al. (2005). TVA is a formal computational theory that accounts for attentional effects in mind and behaviour reported in the psychological literature. NTVA is a neural interpretation of the rate and weight equations of TVA. An overview of the subsequent chapters is presented.
