The Introduction discusses medieval ideas and ideals about the role of the abbot; explains and justifies the scope and limits of the book—which covers the heads (abbots and priors) of all the male monasteries of England and Wales from c.1300 to the Dissolution and beyond; places the book in the context of existing scholarly studies of heads of religious houses in medieval Britain and Europe; describes and discusses the available source material for the project; details the significance of the subject for our understanding of the religious orders, the wider medieval church, and the Dissolution of the monasteries; and outlines the structure of the book and the main themes of individual chapters.
