This chapter introduces the school’s journey with Positive Education and shares the vision for a school community with flourishing at its core. It places Positive Education within the context of Geelong Grammar School’s development of a liberal and holistic education philosophy. It outlines the first four significant steps in the school’s history—its foundation in 1855, the move to its existing site on the edge of Corio Bay in 1914, the establishment of Timbertop in 1953, and the transition to co-education in 1972. It also describes how a focus on the education of the whole child came to be at the heart of the school’s philosophy, and how these progressive steps created fertile soil for the school’s visionary fifth step, namely Positive Education.
