Introduced by international expert Professor Roy Baumeister, this chapter discusses the fundamental role that strong relationships play in thriving school communities. It includes practical strategies for helping students to develop strong communication and social and emotional learning skills. In particular, skills that enhance relationships, such as active constructive responding and mindful listening, are proposed as pathways to communication that is authentic, respectful, and deeply nurturing. Also integral to this domain is a focus on cultivating a positive relationship with the self through self-compassion and self-forgiveness. This chapter discusses the school’s behavioral management policy, which is based on the values of forgiveness and kindness. When students make mistakes, the focus is on helping them to learn and grow from their experiences, which enables transgressions within the school community to be responded to with compassion and forgiveness.
