Coordination and coordinating conjunctions
Coordination and coordinating conjunctions
This chapter contains a description of five types of coordinative relations (conjunctive, disjunctive, adversative, conclusive, and alternative), an inventory of the coordinators which express them, and their evolution in the old language. Other aspects related to coordination are also treated: the juxtaposition of the conjuncts vs. the repetition of the coordinator, split coordination, correlative structures, various types of asymmetries between the conjuncts, the agreement with a coordinated phrase, and some interferences with subordination. The final subchapter treats the use of coordinators as sentence connectors.
Keywords: coordination, conjunctive, disjunctive, adversative coordination, alternative coordination, juxtaposition, asymmetrical coordination, sentence connector
