In this chapter, the general crystallographic concepts are introduced, as are the notation and terminology used throughout this book. Also discussed is the role that symmetry is playing in the self-assembly of crystal structures, be they periodic or quasiperiodic. Furthermore, the different ways of describing crystal structures are demonstrated and their main features are illustrated.
