Mangroves are dicotyledonous woody shrubs or trees that occupy intertidal muddy shores. Seagrasses are monocotyledonous plants that live intertidally or subtidally on sand or mud. Both occupy an environment that is, either permanently or intermittently, submerged, and show structural and physiological adaptation to waterlogging, being rooted in anoxic soil, and high salinity. Both mangroves and seagrasses are polyphyletic: these adaptations evolved a number of times, independently. Mangroves are almost exclusively tropical in distribution; seagrasses extend into temperate latitudes. Where they occur, both mangroves and seagrasses generally dominate their environment.
