The Biology of Mangroves and Seagrasses, Third Edition

Peter J. Hogarth

Mangroves exist in a range of environmental settings, which determine forest structure; gradients in physical variables such as salinity determine species distribution within a mangrove forest. Mangroves promote sedimentation and resist erosion, and hence to some extent create land. They also create and modify a physical environment which is colonized by numerous other species: mangroves are ecosystem engineers. Seagrasses also create and consolidate a habitat. Both habitats are dynamic, prone to disturbance by storms and waves: seagrass meadows are particularly volatile.

Keywords:   mangrove, seagrass meadow, forest structure, physical gradients, plant succession, patch dynamics, species interactions, geomorphological change, zonation, ecosystem engineer
