Latin America and the Caribbean is an area characterized by its heterogeneous nature. Countries differ greatly in size, population, and income levels. This chapter provides an overview of the differences in health systems and a summary of the current status of palliative care in the region. It is structured in four parts: health care systems; policy, guidelines, and quality indicators; role of non-governmental organizations; and future development. Overall, the level of palliative care development in the region is limited and insufficient, and there are no specific policies in place to ensure that older people have access to palliative care. The chapter lists several recommendations on policy, education, services, and auditing/monitoring strategies, and suggests that governments in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the rest of the world take the necessary steps to ensure that palliative care is integrated into health care programmes for all, especially the elderly and other vulnerable populations.
