This chapter discusses the phenomenon of persistence and its relationship to the enormous range of theoretical and empirical time scales in the universe. These range from the incredibly short Planck time, the shortest time scale encountered in theoretical science, to the currently estimated lower empirical limit on the proton lifetime, a time scale that vastly exceeds the currently estimated age of the universe. In between these limits we encounter a variety of timescales associated with natural phenomena, such as the time light takes to cross an atom or the period of an insect’s wing. The chapter discusses various chronons, or fundamental units of time, including Caldirola’s discrete time chronon and Finkelstein’s space-time code chronon.
