This chapter focuses on the brilliant thinkers, from Antiquity to the modern age, who have formulated the great visions of time discussed in this book. The temporal philosophy of the Ancient Greeks Anaximander, Heraclitus, Antiphon, Parmenides, Zeno of Elea, and Aristotle is reviewed, with a focus on Zeno’s paradoxes. Religious perspectives on time are then discussed, because these are portents of the scientific discussions later on in the book and continue to condition many people’s thoughts about time. A discussion of the sceptics and the Age of Reason, with an emphasis on the prescient ideas of Hume, is followed by commentary on the classical mechanical pioneers Galileo and Newton. Because of their ideas about process time, important metaphysicists such as Bergson are discussed. The chapter concludes with an appreciation of the extraordinary thoughts of mathematical physicists such as Schwinger, Caldirola, and Snyder.
Keywords: Ancient Greek philosophers, Zeno’s paradoxes, Age of Reason, Hume, Galileo, Newton, process time, mathematical physicists
