This chapter discusses notions of causality, determinism, blame, teleology, and chaos, looking at views from Antiquity to recent times. It reviews the comments of Leibniz, Locke, and Mill on causality. The chapter rephrases Reichenbach’s mark method of discussing causality in terms of the generalized proposition concept introduced in Chapter 2, concluding that Reichenbach’s approach assumes that the past is unique. The chapter discusses the use of Lyapunov exponents as a measure of chaos in classical deterministic systems, emphasizing that chaos is a relationship between an observer and a system under observation, rather than as an intrinsic attribute of that system alone.
