This chapter examines the current evidence surrounding the critical metals debate. First it examines the range of factors influencing both demand for and supply of critical metals, with particular focus on low-carbon technologies. The chapter then examines the criticality assessment literature. The future demand for critical metals is expected to grow significantly as a result of growth in low-carbon technology deployment. However, supply of critical metals is also expected to increase in the future in response to future demand, and the relatively undeveloped nature of the mining of many of the critical metals. Estimates of future critical metal demand in technologies such as electric vehicles and thin-film PV are challenging in terms of current metal supply, though there is no evidence to suggest that this future metal demand cannot be met by increasing supply.
